Reversibility of red blood cell deformation.
The ability of cells to undergo reversible shape changes is often crucial to their survival. For red blood cells (RBCs), irreversible alteration of the cell shape and flexibility often causes anemia. Here we show theoretically that RBCs may react irreversibly to mechanical perturbations because of tensile stress in their cytoskeleton. The transient polymerization of protein fibers inside the ce...
متن کاملThe Effect of Erythropoietin on Rat’s Red Blood Cell Indices in Simulated Microgravity (Experimental Study)
Purpose: Microgravity causes major changes in various systems of the body in space, such as shift in cerebrospinal fluid, decreased red blood cells count, and electrolyte loss. These complications are very important in space and we should find new approaches to prevent the side effects of microgravity in astronauts. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 21 adult ma...
متن کاملModelling of Red Blood Cell Motion and Deformation Using Particle Based Method
We have developed a numerical method for simulating micro-scale blood flow. We have applied this meth od to model blood flow in malaria infection. Our model well simulated the stretching of malaria-infected red blood cells (Pf-IRBCs), the deformation of Pf-IRBCs in shear flow, and the flow into narrow channels. We have also investigated the margination of Pf-IRBCs in microcirculation.
متن کاملA Two-Dimensional Model of Blood Plasma Flow with Oxygen Transport and Blood Cell Membrane Deformation
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder that alters the red blood cell (RBC) structure and function such that hemoglobin (Hb) cannot effectively bind and release oxygen. Our novel 2-D computational model represents a fast, time efficient method developed to analyze flow dynamics, O2 diffusion, and cell deformation in the microcirculation. A finite difference, Crank-Nicholson scheme is u...
متن کاملPartitioning of red blood cell aggregates in bifurcating microscale flows
Microvascular flows are often considered to be free of red blood cell aggregates, however, recent studies have demonstrated that aggregates are present throughout the microvasculature, affecting cell distribution and blood perfusion. This work reports on the spatial distribution of red blood cell aggregates in a T-shaped bifurcation on the scale of a large microvessel. Non-aggregating and aggre...
